How Are Fossils Formed
We all are slaves of fossil fuels for centuries; the common fossil fuels are Petroleum, natural gas, and coal. They are termed as fossil fuels because all of them are formed as a result of pressure by earth’s crust, bacterial processes and heat on the decayed plants and animals. The term fossil has arise from the Latin word “fossilis” which means to "dug up," as we have to truly dug out them and study. Fossils are honestly priceless gifts from the geologic past. Fossils are therefore the remains of ancient living organisms like animals and plants, the traces or impressions of living things from geologic past, or the evidence of their activities which are conserved in the earth’s crust. The process of fossil formation is called fossilization.
Fossils can called as omnipresent as they can be found in almost all parts of the world however only a little fraction of life becomes fossil. How are fossils formed are actually a series of event and if any event is unfortunately missing then fossilization does not occurs. As a matter of fact most of the living organisms after death are naturally only decayed to recycle. As a consequence, the great quantity of fossils indicates the higher rate of favorable conditions encouraging preservation.
The most worldwide method of how are fossils formed is observed by the fact that once an animal or plant though unpleasant but truth dies, then it falls to the ground, and is totally covered by sediment. This is often sediments brought from water. The organism which died in a river or brought to; it gets covered with sediments over a period of time. Lastly after hundreds to millions of years, the land is weathered or eroded and then the fossil can be seen. The sole answer to the question: "How are fossils formed?" is not only this as there are several other ways of fossilization.
The first step in the formation of fossil is the immortal truth - Death. The living organism dies near water and decomposition is triggered. Followed by the second step of Sedimentation in which sediments bury the exoskeleton in due course of time.
The faster sedimentation favors the fossilization. The chemical composition of the sediments also adds to the prospect fossil. There are infinite possibilities about the fossils that will be formed. This is then followed by Permineralization where the minerals seal the cellular spaces and finally crystallize. The shape of the original plant or animal is then conserved as rock. With the passage of time the newer sediments piling up creates pressure which in turn converts the sediments into rock.
The next step is uplift. The movements of the continental plates moving around the earth, crashing into each other, mountains are formed; previous sea floors are raised and become dry land. As a result of the movement of the plates, the fossils will come nearer to the surface and more rapidly discovered by some curios fossil hunter. Finally erosion works favorably for the fossil hunters. Over the years the mountains are damaged away and the fossil gets a chance to come out to tell its mysterious story to all.
